As usual, the pickings are as slim music-wise as they are bountiful (for most of us fortunate ones anyway) food-wise this holiday weekend. But there are still several shows likely to lure Oregonians out of our tryptophan comas and football frenzy. And just wait till next weekend…. Meanwhile, let’s all give thanks that we live in a place with so much to offer, including music. And consider helping out our fellow Oregonians who aren’t able to enjoy its fruits.

Portland Ballet with PSU Orchestra, Friday-Sunday, Lincoln Hall, Portland State University.

In its short lifespan, this annual collaboration between young orchestral players and even younger dancers has become a welcome holiday tradition. Music fans will relish live performances of Rossini’s The Enchanted Toyshop and Ravel’s glittering Mother Goose, a 20th century masterpiece that shows that, in the right hands, even music originally aimed at kids can enchant listeners of all ages.

The UO faculty pianist joins members of the Oregon String Quartet (Fritz Gearhart, Kathryn Lucktenberg and Steve Pologe) in performances of a sonata, trio, and scherzo by Brahms, inaugurating a new cycle of the composer’s chamber music with piano they’ll also perform in later concerts over three seasons.

With help from Broadway singers, the orchestra plays music from Disney movies including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and more, accompanied by projected film clips.

Some of the city’s top jazzers from Blue Cranes, Battle Hymns & Gardens and more should blow away the post turkey haze.

David Benoit, Christmas Tribute to Charlie Brown, Sunday, Newmark Theatre, Portland.

The smooth jazz pianist, who has composed music for the Charlie Brown TV specials for the past decade, plays some of that music as well as tunes by one of his predecessors in that role, the great jazzer Vince Guaraldi, the original composer from the series’ 1965 inception. Portland’s Grant High School Royal Blue Choir joins the action, with Shiva Bharadwaj, Shankar Viswanathan and Lyndsey Sherman opening the show with Indian drumming and vocal percussion.
