Classical music mostly takes a well deserved holiday, leaving center stage to jazz in this weekend’s Oregon music— including one of the state’s most appealing bands, Blue Cranes, accompanying a dance performance in Portland’s Washington Park, which you can read about in Jamuna Chiarini’s weekend dance preview. The summer outdoor series concludes with Fretlandia Duo unleashing their violas da gamba on Wednesday, Michael Allen Harrison & Julianne Johnson playing piano and singing on Friday, Imperial – Columbia Brass blowing Baroque, Renaissance and contemporary works on Saturday, and the legendary teacher/trumpeter Thara Memory’s terrific, award winning Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra on Sunday.

The great New Orleans-born trumpeter/composer, who’s scored dozens of soundtracks, collected many Grammies and other prizes, and even written an opera and other large-scale compositions, brings his crack quintet for two shows of funk, R&B, and blues-tinged jazz.
