Jazz takes center stage as classical music takes a breather in Oregon music.

Classical music mostly takes a well deserved holiday, leaving center stage to jazz in this weekend’s Oregon music— including one of the state’s most appealing bands, Blue Cranes, accompanying a dance performance in Portland’s Washington Park, which you can read about in Jamuna Chiarini’s weekend dance preview. The great New Orleans-born trumpeter/composer, who’s scored dozens of soundtracks, collected many Grammies and other prizes, and even written an opera and other large-scale compositions, brings his crack quintet for two shows of funk, R&B, and blues-tinged jazz.
