Tonight, Tuesday, the Portland Piano International opens perhaps its most fascinating festival ever with a concert by acclaimed new music specialist Anthony de Mare that features music of one of America’s finest composer, Stephen Sondheim — as re-imagined by fourteen other contemporary composers, including such luminaries as Steve Reich (!), fellow Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec and William Bolcom, theater composer Jake Heggie (“Dead Man Walking”), Portland native Kenji Bunch, jazz composer/piano great Fred Hersch, and more. It’s part of a fascinating series that runs all week at World Forestry Center in Washington Park, focusing on American music.
