  • The Northwest Film Center has started to post its summer schedule, including the lineups for June’s Portland Jewish Film Festival and the annual Top Down Rooftop Cinema. Highlights of the former include Natalie Portman’s feature directing debut, the Amos Oz adaptation “A Tale of Love and Darkness” (June 18), the Polish horror film “Demon,” which played during this year’s PIFF After Dark (June 26), and the French drama “Once in a Lifetime” (June 29), written by high school student Ahmed Drame and based on his experiences learning about the Holocaust. Documentary profile subjects include Norman Lear and Hannah Arendt. The festival runs from June 15-29.

  • The Top Down series is always a chance for the Film Center to let its cinematic hair down a bit, and this year is no exception. Screening outdoors on the roof of the Hotel deLuxe parking garage will be crowd-pleasers such as “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” the worst movie ever made; “Attack the Block,” which introduced the world to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star John Boyega; and John Waters’ mainstream breakthrough, “Hairspray.” Someday I hope they show “Pink Flamingos” under the stars. That would be memorable.
  • The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival has issued its call for entries for the 2017 festival, scheduled to take place in early March. The June 17 early-bird deadline is fast approaching. POWFest is also hosting a free screening of youth-directed films, including attendees of the POWGirls filmmaking camp, at the Clinton Street Theater on Monday, May 30.
  • In other festival submission news, the late deadline for the Portland Film Festival, which takes place August 29 through September 5, has been extended to next Tuesday, May 31.
  • The sexually explicit, psychedelic 1973 Japanese animated feature “Belladonna of Sadness,” which had been scheduled to play the weekend of May 27 at the Hollywood Theatre, has been extended to a full week. Because you just can’t get enough sexually explicit, psychedelic Japanese animation.
  • ReelAbilities, the nation’s largest film festival devoted to the stories of the disabled, comes to Portland for the first time this weekend at the Alberta Rose Theater. Three days of films culminate in a Sunday night showcase of local films and a selection of comedic shorts.
